Case Study

Inch Drive

Tusk developed a custom control system for a mine ball mill inching drive. An inch drive is used to slowly turn a ball mill for maintenance and inspection purposes.

The Problem

The existing inch drive was too slow. Because of the incredible forces involved the machine was designed for power not speed but full power was only required at certain stages in the process.

Our Solution

Tusk created a control system that managed the power output of the inch drive to increase the speed when low power was required. This upgrade decreased the time required to do routine maintenance by 60% saving the mine tens of thousands of dollars in downtime every week.
